Please give more details of new technical application area:
Conventionally laminated rubber isolator comprising of elastomer layers interleaved with steel plates as reinforcement and commonly known as steel reinforced elastomeric isolator SREI are used for seismic isolation Steel plates used as reinforcement sheet is heavy and makes up for most of the weight of the isolator Further thick end plates are needed on top and bottom surfaces of the isolators which add additional weight and cost to the isolator Fibre reinforcement is one of the best alternatives of steel shim plates Fibre reinforced elastomeric isolators FREI can be made using layers of rubber bonded with thin layers of bidirectional fibre fabric as reinforcement Further no steel end plates are required and the FREIs are simply placed at the interface between sub and superstructure without any connection Consequently ease of installation is enhanced to a large extent Thus replacing steel with fibre and eliminating the requirements of end plate both weight and cost of isolators are reduced Effectiveness of U FREIs in seismic response control is established on the basis of extensive earthquake simulator testing carried out at IIT Guwahati In this experimental study it is established that UFREIs are highly effective in controlling seismic response of the test model

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
