Smart meters revolutionises the field of energy measurement and control. It forms the backbone of Advanced Metering Infrastructure AMI. AMI provides more controllability and observability to the Utilities through smart meters on the loads thereby ensuring and maintaining the quality of supply. With AMI, the utilities can instantaneously monitor current and voltage signals, enhance forwarded metering and net metering, program demand integration period and profile capture period, etc. The smart meter will act as a gateway for the smart water metering, smart gas metering, controlling home appliances etc. In the future the technology can rise to such a stage where even the home appliances can be remotely controlled by AMI. Thus, the AMI has also got a solid platform on IoT technologies and applications.

    Abstract:

Applications: Forms the backbone of Advanced Metering Infrastructure(AMI) Compatible with Distributed generation and Smart Grid Universal DLMS communication protocol Similar platform can be used for Water meter and gas meter Load management Demand Side Management Import export energy measurement
Advantages: Accuracy and transparency in energy measurements and billing Real time and online monitoring of load conditions Storage of grid events like power outage, over voltage, under voltage etc. Isolation from grid abnormalities Bidirectional communication with utility and customer Reconfigurable peak load at different tariff zones Remote load connection and disconnection Firmware Upgrade Over the Air(FOTA) Anti-tampering detection and measurements Ability to communicate with smart phones and PCs Enhancement of electricity business at micro levels New job opportunities in remote diagnostics and data handling AT&C Losses can be reduced to a rate approximately below 7 percentage MI being a life time infrastructure for the utilities, indigenous development allows overcoming of the monopoly of other foreign bodies thereby vanishing the enslavement of the utilities from AMC charges, periodic services etc. Indigenous development provides strategic data security Indigenous development can remove licensing costs that sums around Rs 20K for a single meter’s life time that may extend up to 10 years approximately Smart meter facilitates efficient and accurate metering that can effectively generate an additional profit of at least Rs. one lakh crore per year to the utilities and government, which are now lost through the unbilled energy usage, reported as on the year 2019

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
