    Abstract:

Applications: 1. The invention provides a cost-effective and environment-friendly approach for the preparation of activated carbon from waste human hair using a modified synthesis route. The study further extends towards the utilization of activated carbon as electrode material for supercapacitor. The choice of waste human hair not only acts as a carbon source but provides in-situ biological morphology. 2. Also, the inorganic elements present in Keratin compounds get ingrained to the carbon skeleton during a modified synthesis route. This lead to the formation of highly porous and heteroatom doped activated carbon nanosheets structure. The asprepared activated carbon is used as an electrode material, and aqueous electrolytes (1 M H2SO4 and 6 M KOH) are used for the assembled symmetric supercapacitor.
Advantages: 1. The present invention does not require high cost material. The full device has been fabricated using in-expensive, non-toxic and environment friendly material. 2. Zero value waste human hair obtained from barber shop, 5 used as a carbon source. 3. Functionalized and highly porous activated carbon derived from human hair can be synthesized in bulk due to its simple synthesis procedure. 4. Prepared activated carbon is cheap as compared to other carbon material such graphene, carbon nanotube, which require tedious and toxic synthesis procedures. 5. Depending upon application the properties of the activated can be easily tuned by modifying synthesis procedure. 6. The synthesized activated carbon shows excellent electrode performance in three electrode setup. 7. The assembly of supercapacitor device uses non-toxic and environment friendly aqueous electrolyte which deliver excellent energy density in aqueous medium.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
