An SDR of any form factor becomes a usable product only if suitable waveforms are ported on to it. The utility of SDR will depend on availability of highly robust waveforms supporting voice and data. Requirements and challenges in the context of military communication are distinctly different from those in the commercial wireless scenario. Security, reliability, availability and power efficiency are given more importance than higher throughput and multimedia services. Both tactical voice and data waveforms comes under this Product. A repository of three legacy voice waveforms and two data waveforms have been developed. The voice waveforms include voice FM, voice AM DSB voice AM SSB and the data wave forms include Narrowband Low Data Rate Frequency Hopping NB LDR FH waveform, Wideband High Data Rate WBHDR waveform

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
