Inventor Institution/Organization/Company Department Designation
Dr. R. P Saini Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy Professor
Technical Application Area: Energy/Power
If 'Other', please specify:
Please give more details of new technical application area:
Cold storage plants is a Pico hydro powered plant in the mountain areas where lot of opportunities are available for generating micro hydropower. It is highly beneficial to energize the chains of small capacity cold storage units for improving the life of vegetables and fruits for the community engaged in vegetable and fruit growing. The integration of micro-hydropower with cold storage is considered as economically viable and feasible for such areas. To provide sustainable solutions for the above problems, low-cost cold storage for 1.5-2.0 tons capacity was designed and developed to help the farmers for creating more facilities for long term storage of perishable crops. The cold storage is consuming only 1.5-2.0 kW power, while the surplus power of about 3.0 kW can be distributed to the local areas for lighting and other livelihood purposes and the tariff collected can improve the economy of the system.

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
With the objective to develop an integrated hydro power cold storage unit a mini cold storage unit was designed and fabricated and the performance of the unit was tested in laboratory. A unit is demonstrated at a selected pico-hydro site. The cold storage powered by Pico-hydro plant has been deployed at Barni village of Naugaon, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand to provide sustainable solutions for the preservation of crops in hilly areas.

    Abstract:

Applications: Building local capacity of communities for enhancing life of fruits and vegetables in mountain areas. Creating awareness about renewable sources of energy and using them for entrepreneurship like micro cottage industries etc. thereby improving economic conditions. People can preserve their fruits and vegetable for 2-3 weeks.
Advantages: It has a storage capacity of nearly 3000 kg of vegetables and fruits. Improves the life of vegetables and fruits so that farmers can sell when the market prices are high. The tariff collected from the cold storage can provide local employment and the revenue earned from cold storage is helpful in providing local employment. Excess power can be used for lightening purposes.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
