The present invention is related to the passively operated prosthetic knee joint having the kinematics of four bar linkage planar mechanism More precisely the invention presents a polycentric knee joint with patient specific settings to change the length of the link used in the anterior and posterior side of the knee joint while ensuring its stability at the stance phase of the gait cycle in all conditions including variable walking speed greater toe clearance and different sizes of the residual limb Additionally for a specific set of length of the link the instantaneous center of rotation can move from superior to inferior position along the trochanter knee ankle TKA alignment line and anterior to posterior movement across the TKA alignment line at static condition during the fitment of knee joint prosthesis In addition a spring assisted knee rotator mechanism is incorporated within the top part of the knee joint to assist the cross legged sitting on the ground at no load condition Furthermore a dovetail adaptor enables the anterior posterior movement of the knee prosthesis to ensure the alignment of the load line and knee axis according to the need of the patient Moreover an elastomer which acts as an extension stopper is fixed posteriorly to absorb the force generated during the terminal impact at the end of the swing phase due to the retraction of torsion spring to its initial position and it also helps in minimizing the generated shock and noise and the change in stability significantly

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
A set of 5 pieces have been ordered for manufacturing . Different parts of the prototypes have been manufactured and assembly of the manufactured parts is still awaited. After the assembly protype will be ready for the field test in which several parameters of the GAIT cycle need to be assesed along with the compatibility of the developed protype with differeny stump length amputees. After the evalutaion of the obtained data from various parameters prototype will be enhanced in case of constructive feedback or can be sent for the batch or mass production.

    Abstract:

Applications: 30 million amputees currently living in developing countries like Asia, Africa and South America out of which 9 million people have suffered from TF amputation and are in need of prosthetic knee joint. According to the 2011 census of India there are 5.4 million locomotor disabled persons in India. Only 5-15 percentage amputees acquires a prosthetic medical device. Upto 80 percentage of amputees are not able to afford a prosthesis A prosthetic knee joint is a lower limb artificial device used for above knee or transfemoral amputees along with the aid of other wearables device such as socket pylon and foot It is used to provide mobility and necessary ambulation to its user by achieving normal human GAIT pattern through its passive or active mechanism A normal human GAIT pattern reduces the metabolic cost associated with the walking. A skilled prosthetist decides the type of mechanism settings used in the knee joint device for the rehabilitation period and regular use requirement
