Inventor Institution/Organization/Company Department Designation
Dr. SOWMIYA CHAWLA INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (INDIAN SCHOOL OF MINES) DHANBAD CIVIL ENGINEERING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Technical Application Area: Industrial Waste Utilization
If 'Other', please specify:
Transportation Geotechnology- Railway track
Please give more details of new technical application area:
Recycle and reuse of large quantities of OB dumps as a railway construction material for saving the more costly and non-renewable sub-ballast material. The mine OB may be used as an alternate sub-ballast material owing to its acceptable characteristics as a track sub-ballast material in terms of morphology, mineralogy, stress-strain, durability and load deformation behavior. The combination of recycled overburden dumps as sub-ballast together with geocell reinforcement may provide a cheaper technical alternative as compared to the more expensive sub-ballast material. Application Potential Long Term Use of less costly three-dimensional geocells for providing better performace of new as well as existing rail tracks, especially in areas with weak subgrade. Prediction of stresses and displacements has always been a problem for the tracks where the area of investigation is localized, such as tracks inside tunnels, tracks on slopes, tracks with geosynthetic layers, etc. The proposed model will be useful for analysis of such tracks. This technology can easily be extended for prediction of stresses and displacements in road pavements and airport runways. This will lead to a better and safer design for these structures. Immediate Recycle and reuse of large quantities of OB dumps as a railway construction material for saving the more costly and non-renewable sub-ballast material.

Does the technology help in replacing any import items currently
procured from outside India?
No
Does the technology have export potential? No
Category of Technology developed: Immediate Deployment
Stage of Development: Lab-scale
Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
Similitude ratio means the ratio of any linear dimension of the model to the corresponding dimension of the actual prototype track. Based on practical consideration, a full panel model track with a similitude ratio of 1:4 was adopted in this study.

    Abstract:

Applications: Application Potential Long Term Use of less costly three-dimensional geocells for providing better performace of new as well as existing rail tracks, especially in areas with weak subgrade.
Advantages: Deliverables from research in terms of new knowledge, process and future direction The basic aim of this research is to develop a sustainable solution for recycle and reuse of large quantities of OB dumps as a railway construction material for saving the more costly and non-renewable sub-ballast material. This technology can be directly used for accurate prediction of geocell reinforced track stresses and displacements during formulation of a rational design methodology for laying or upgrading the tracks reinforced with geocell. This will lead to economical and safe designs, especially for extreme cases such as tracks subjected to heavy axle loads or tracks on soft soils. The proposed model will help in the prediction of stresses and displacements for tracks where the area of investigation is localized, such as tracks inside tunnels, tracks on slopes, tracks with geosynthetic layers, etc. which has always been a problem. This technology can easily be extended for prediction of stresses and displacements in road pavements and airport runways. This will lead to a better and safer design for these structures. The present study will remove all the drawbacks from the studies carried out in the geocell reinforced railway tracks taking into consideration of the time-dependent soil behavior, especially in the presence of water. Complete material characterization of the OB will be carried out to determine its feasibility as a track sub-ballast material. The recycle of Over Burden (OB) dumps as sub-ballast material with geocell confinement will also be studied in detail which can minimize the construction and maintenance costs of rail tracks while conserving the more costly sub-ballast aggregates and also reusing OB dumps in a cost-effective and eco-friendly way.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
