    Abstract:

Applications: A simulation device with virtual reality and haptic feedback, to train doctors in performing endoscopy procedures.
Advantages: The current system of surgical training and assessment predominantly follows the traditional method of practicing on real patients under the observation of experienced doctors. This method is not easily scalable and at times poses a severe risk to patients. The doctors themselves are at risk in some cases. Virtual Reality together with haptics offers an immersive, flexible, and cost effective method for training doctors in surgical and interventional procedures. EndoMimyk is a robotic system, that brings together VR and haptics technology into a platform for training doctors in Gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures. The simulator enables the doctors to train for complex manoeuvres and hand eye coordination needed to perform the procedure in a safe virtual world. It offers realistic visuals, haptic feedback, and auditory guidance for complete immersion. It also has modules for training in advanced GI diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Assessment and tracking frameworks implemented into the system will allow for trainees to monitor their progress and trainers to oversee the progress.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
