Technology developed: Biomedical Signal Analyzer for Seizure detection and prediction (TP19767030638)
Category: Product(Hardware/Material/Software)
Details of Inventor(s):
Inventor Institution/Organization/Company Department Designation
Devanand Palayil CDAC Thiruvananthapuram HSTG Scientist F
Technical Application Area: Healthcare
If 'Other', please specify:
Please give more details of new technical application area:
Biomedical applications using Biosignal processing and Artificial Intelligence ,Machine Learning and Deep Learning. The neurological disorder Epilepsy is caused by abnormal electrical impulses in the brain called seizures. Automated analysis of prolonged Electroencephalogram signal can quickly retrieve meaningful neuro physiological information for assisting expert doctors to detect neurological disorders such as epileptic seizure etc. The EEG Analyzer supports identification of the seizure regions in EEG signals, in a patient independent manner. Seizure prediction system alerts about the impending seizures before 2 to 30 minutes of the actual seizure onset. So, the patient can take appropriate preventive actions that helps to avoid anxiety about the coming seizure, the drowsiness, headache, vomiting etc. This new technical application could be easily extended to detect OR predict other neurological disorders like Sleep disorders, Dementia and Alzheimer diseases, Parkinsons Disorder, Autism Spectrum disorders, Memory Dysfunction Analysis and Brain Computer interface applications for elderly and disabled people etc. The technology could be easily extended to other biosignal and image processing applications for healthcare industries.

    Abstract:

Applications: Apart from simple seizure warning devices, fully automated closed loop seizure prevention systems are conceivable. Treatment concepts could move from preventive strategies e.g. long term medication with anti epileptic drugs towards an EEG triggered on demand therapy e.g. by excretion of fast acting anticonvulsant substances or by electrical or other stimulation in an attempt to reset brain dynamics to a state that will no longer develop into a seizure, which may reduce the side effects of medication. The EEG signal processing techniques may also possibly be extended to detection and prediction of Alzheimer disease, Parkinsons disease & Sleep disorders, EEG fMRI based Seizure Source localization, identifying the High frequency oscillations HFOs at the time of seizure there by locating the seizure origin which may help the doctors in identifying brain surgery region, Brain Computer interface applications for elderly and disabled people and drowsiness detection etc.
Advantages: Automated analysis of prolonged Electroencephalogram signal can quickly retrieve meaningful neurophysiological information for assisting expert doctors to detect neurological disorders such as epileptic seizure etc. The EEG Analyzer supports identification of the seizure regions in EEG signals, in a patient independent manner. A method capable of reliably predicting the occurrence of seizures could significantly improve the quality of life for the patients by removing the anxiety of the patient about the uncertainty of start time of the coming seizure. The patient can take preventive steps to avoid the injuries. So, the additional medicine requirements can be avoided for treating the patients injury. Even the requirement of bystander can be avoided and the patient can go for employments.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
