The application of micro components in various fields have promoted the development of ultra-precision micro-machine tools. The micro-machining is characterized by its high accuracy, good dimensional precision and smooth surface finish. The micro-milling machine tools are capable to produce complex 3D shapes with mirror surface finish on difficult-to-machine materials such as silicon. However the major difficulties of micro-machine tools are their low tool stiffness and low MRR. High speed micro-machining has been adopted to improve the productivity and also to reduce the chip load. High-speed micro-milling machine tools have required high speed spindles to maintain the machining speed and efficiency. But at these high spindle speed acute vibration takes place in the machine tools (Suh et al, 2002). This jeopardizes the dimensional accuracy, precision and surface finish of micro size products. Apart from this, chatter may be developed due to vibration and that can lead to tool wear and breakage of the cutting tool (Quintana and Ciurana, 2011). Chatter may also affect the spindle and the machine tool (Clancy and Shin, 2002). Therefore vibration isolation is necessary to maintain the accuracy and surface finish of the machined surface and also to maintain the tool life. The stiffness of the machine structure plays a very crucial role for machining efficiency and vibration isolation of a machine tool (Chen et al, 2016). Hence the high-speed micro-milling machine structure must have to provide good static and dynamic stiffness as well as good damping characteristic to the machine tool for quality machining performance (Huo et al, 2010).

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
A prototype of high speed micro milling has been developed with a travel of 150 mm in each three directions with an accuracy of plus minus 2.5 microns and other with ultra high precision of plus minus 500 nano meter. Two machines have been developed one is semi high speed with a maximum spindle speed of 60k rpm and the other one is ultra high speed machine with a maximum spindle rotational speed of 140k rpm.

    Abstract:

Applications: An assembled machine structure containing a gantry type machine frame and a machine bed made of granite was developed for increasing the static and dynamic stiffness as well as the damping capacity of a high-speed micro-milling machine tool. It consists of a machine bed, two frame columns and an upper block. The amplitude of vibration is very less and approaching towards nanometer level throughout the entire rotational speed of the spindle used while micro-milling operation. This design is suitable for vibration isolation of the high-speed micro-machining center, thus asserting high precision and excellent surface finish for micro machining. The fabricated machine can create three dim. free form features on hard metals and ceramics.
Advantages: The machines can perform high speed materail removal job on metal and ceramics of high hardness. Ti and Ni alloys have been machined with a great accuracy and precision. The machine bed is vibration free and therefore a maximum deflection due to vibration is noted as less than 10 nm.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
