Please give more details of new technical application area:
Universal Auxiliary Converters are used in the railway traction rolling stocks viz.locomotives, EMUs etc. to provide three phase supply to various auxiliary motors that feed different types of loads such as reciprocating compressors, centrifugal blowers and centrifugal pumps etc. and also to onboard battery charger. It was designed and developed to replace the existing converter in various rolling stocks which differ in terms of the input supply system, rated capacity, volume occupied, cooling arrangement, interface with the locomotive control circuit, method of control etc. Apart from the technical features, the main objective of using this common auxiliary converter in place of existing converter is to lessen the difficulty in item procurement, inventory management and maintenance.

Category of Technology developed: Immediate Deployment
Stage of Development: Field Test
Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
TRL Level 6. As per the MoU CDAC had to design and develop a total of 7 proto models in span of two phases, out of which 6 nos. to be supplied to the CLW, West Bengal ,Indian Railway is the end user. In phase I, CDAC developed two proto models of Universal Auxiliary Converter out of which first proto model was kept in CDAC Lab for future upgradation and the second one was sent to CLW. CDAC had conducted the load test on the second proto model at CLW site by connecting actual source and loads of the locomotive. After this, 5 more proto models with varying module structure were developed after incorporating several electrical and mechanical changes as specified by the Railways. These units were also sent to CLW and conducted preliminary level testing at their site. Due to lack of testing facility at CLW, all proto models were shifted to Kazipet locoshed in Thelungana. CDAC has conducted functionality testing on three proto models at the loco shed. Finally, two proto models were installed in Conventional class of Locomotive and tested with actual load and source till 30 percentage. Railway officials at Kazipet insisted to develop a new add on module to integrate into the Converter unit for interfacing with the Conventional Locomotive. CDAC developed and tested this module and installed it in one of the proto models.

    Abstract:

Applications: The universal auxiliary converter, which meets the all the normative standards which are essential for equipment onboard rail vehicles, are suitable for all the types of electric locomotives and EMUs, either the new builds or retro fitment. It can be interfaced universally since it meets different input supplies, cooling requirement, mechanical interface as well as load requirements needed in different types of rolling stock. This technology can also be used in place of existing Arno converter which is used in some type of locomotives to convert single phase AC to three phase AC. In future, if a particular class of locomotive requires more power rating, then more number of similar converter units can be used as a scalable configuration. Presently, the technology is used to converter single phase AC to three phase AC to feed auxiliary equipments, the same technology with required power enhancement can be implemented for the main converter also, that is used for the propulsion.
Advantages: Universal design with wide input voltage variation for different locomotive In compliance with IEC standards for Rolling Stock Application Input power factor near unity Input current THD less than 10% Output voltage regulation of less than +/- 5% Output voltage THD less than 10% IGBT based power stack for front end converter and inverter IPM based power stack for battery charger Interface with Vehicle Control Unit through fibre optic CAN Other handshaking signal interface through potential free contacts LCD display fault log using lap top through USB port Isolated control cubicle meets electromagnetic compatibility Effective power management during Panto-bouncing as well as thermal overloading of devices Converter can be used as a scalable configuration

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
