    Abstract:

Applications: A device to accelerate the most time consuming and laborious phase of the sugarcane harvesting process thereby accelerating the harvest time and reducing hard labour and making the process more comfortable to the farm workers involved in the harvesting.
Advantages: Sugarcane harvesting is an extremely labour intensive process. The work is carried out by gangs of workers who move from one field to another during the harvest season. Labour of this kind is increasingly in short supply and is leading to harvest losses. A sugarcane harvest tractor implement is developed in this project brings down the labour requirement during the harvest process. The device consists of an implement that is attached to the back of the tractor and is driven from the tractor power take off. The implement has a cutter mechanism to the right of the tractor that cuts the cane at the required height. The cut cane falls on the conveyor belt is transferred and dropped on other side of the tractor. The key innovation that the product brings is in this last step reducing more than 50 percent of the labour involved in harvesting. Also, the tractor does not have to wait for manual removal of the cut cane before cutting the next line.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
