    Abstract:

Applications: Bone drilling is a step required in various medical surgeries like orthopedic, dental, neurosurgery and trauma surgical operations for reconstruction and repair of a fractured bone. Holes are drilled by applying an axial force on a drilling tool for penetrating it through the bone. High cutting force and torque generated during the process leads to problems such as delamination of the bone, increased crack levels, poor hole accuracy and sometimes even drill breakage. Further, direct contact between the bone and drill tool bit results in significant heat production and can cause problems like thermal osteonecrosis (bone death), microcracks, and reduced regeneration capacity of bone. Hence, in order to minimize the drilling temperature, force and torque, processes like water jet machining, laser drilling, ultrasonic assisted drilling, two phase drilling and rotary ultrasonic bone drilling (RUBD) have been developed. Of these ultrasonic drilling has reduced force and temperature but requires abrasive slurry to be flown at the drilling site that can cause infection at the drilling site. Other processes using RUBD are impractical as they use huge machines and are only capable of drilling vertical holes, thereby limiting their use in surgical processes. The current invention provides a RUBD based automatic ultrasonic bone drilling machine that can be used tri-axially (vertically, horizontally or at any inclination angle) and is also surgical theatre compatible.
Advantages: 1. Performs drilling operation automatically with minimal intervention of a medical surgeon, thus minimizing the chance of human error 2. Capable of drilling holes vertically, horizontally, as well as at any inclined angle. 3. Produces lesser cutting force and torque. 4. Produces lesser rise in temperature thus eliminating the problem of thermal osteonecrosis 5. Provides higher stability for implants and screws inserted in the bone
