    Abstract:

Applications: Developed a multipurpose electrospun fiber-based system that immobilizes positively charged molecules through electrostatic interaction. This was achieved by covalently conjugating an anionic polysaccharide viz. sulphated carboxymethylcellulose (sCMC) to electrospun poly-(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/gelatin scaffold. The conjugated system successfully immobilized various cationic molecules like toluidine blue O, lysozyme and different cationic growth factors. Immobilized growth factors were retained on the system for long duration with their bioactivity preserved. The system was cytocompatible and demonstrated long-term functional and morphological stability. The system possesses potential to be used in various biomedical applications.
Advantages: Tissue engineering is a growing field which aims to regenerate or repair an injured tissue by using scaffold, cells and signaling cues either alone or in combination. The scaffold used in the invention is a fibrous scaffold fabricated using electrospinning which is well-known for its versatile nature. Current approaches of growth factor (GF) delivery using electrospun scaffolds are direct adsorption, physical encapsulation and conjugation of GF to the fibers. The innovation described here enables long term immobilization of cationic GFs on electrospun fibers using electrostatic interaction without adversely affecting GF stabilityoractivity.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
