Abstract:
The present invention provides a new friction stir welding tool/ device for solid state joining of metals. It reduces the heat generation during the friction stir welding due to friction between the shoulder and base metal. The stationary shoulder aspect in new friction stir welding tool design helps producing a sound weld joint even with reduced heat input. During the welding, stationary shoulder slides over the surface of the plates to be welded without rotation, which reduce a) the plunging effect of the shoulder, b) friction heat generation between shoulder and base metal and c) thinning of the weld. The tool traverses without rotation of shoulder without producing any flash on the weld joint. The device comprises three parts: rotating tool, stationary shoulder and holder for stationary shoulder. The rotating tool comprises a pin and a sub-shoulder to prevent the upward movement of plasticized material and enter in stationary shoulder body. The new tool produces a symmetrical joint with more uniform properties across the weld joint (advancing side and retreating side of the joint). It also reduces width of heat affected zone. If any, plasticized material enters through the gap between rotating tool pin and stationary shoulder, a blade with rotating tool (fixed in its body) acts as a chip breaker. Stationary shoulder body having machined slots which acts as a passage for the broken chips. Thus, the plasticized material exits the tool body. The invented tool produces a sound weld joint using a wide parameters range with the help of a simple tool design. The design provides easily replacement of worn out stationary shoulder, if needed. Problem of the accumulation of the ingressed material into the tool body is eliminated using this tool. Therefore, it can be used for the producing long run welds. Symmetrical weld joint produced with narrow heat affected zone is one of the most attractive features of this tool.

ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
