Abstract:
The present invention provides asystem and method of simultaneous denitrification and oxidation of industrial wastewater. Nitrate ions are being mineralized by the direct and indirect electrochemical mechanism. Direct reduction is mainly done by electrons and H+ whereas indirect mechanism is mainly delivered by highly reactive free radicals like •OH. The dimensionally stable electrodes (DSE) such as without limitation Ti/RuO2, Ti/Pt, Ti/IrO2 were selected as anode whereas metal (such as Fe, Al, etc.) or DSEs were selected as cathode. Effects of various operating conditions like applied current density, wastewater pH, gap and time on the nitrate reduction efficiency with byproduct distribution (NO2− and NH4+) were analyzed. The structural and morphological characterization of the electrodes was carried out by using XRD and FE-SEM techniques. Wear of the electrode was studied with AFM technique. The mechanism for the nitrate reduction as well as oxidation of the ammonium ion was confirmed on the basis of the identified intermediates by Ion Chromatograph (IC).

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
