Fatigue is a sub health state, which seriously affects the quality of life. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a group of systemic syndromes characterized by long term extreme fatigue (including physical fatigue and mental fatigue), accompanied by headache, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, mental fatigue, and depression. Insomnia, forgetfulness, slow thinking and inattention. The basic characteristics are extreme fatigue for a long time, no relief after rest, and no abnormal findings in physical examination and routine laboratory examination. Exposure to such strenuous conditions for prolonged time periods can be hazardous to health which may raise serious health issue and even lead to death. Generally, the class of people that are exposed to this kind of strenuous activities are of soldiers, ground level labors, field operators in industries, fire fighters, drivers etc. Persons who are involved in prolonged strenuous work often gets exhausted and it is estimated that at 100per cent exhaustion level, they lost their physical and cognitive responses. Hence, they are susceptible to make error, which not only creates the property loss but importantly it impacts the lives of others which are present in the site.At present, the common way to estimate the exhaustion level is to take the response from individual itself like Profile of Mood Status (POMS) method, but most of the time one fails to correctly estimate his present physical condition. Accurate estimation of physical exhaustion can be seen as crucial tool in various fields, for example: Exhaustion levels of soldiers who are most of the time exposed to vulnerable areas where medical facilities are difficult to reach. It can be a reliable tool for making decision of their duty chart. Measurement of exhaustion levels of personnel doing other type of strenuous activity like athletes, firefighters, traffic guards etc.

Please describe in detail including the TRL Level:
In the present invention, a non invasive saliva based test kit is developed to estimate the exhaustion level of human being, involved in intense activities. The kit is a portable point of care device which is intended to exploit the rheological changes in saliva at different exhaustion level. The kit will assess the discharge rate of saliva at different activity levels of human. The estimation of saliva discharge through microchannel can be utilized to estimate exhaustion level, once the device is trained. The device is calibrated now and well tested, at present, with medium sized human subject group at different levels of activities. The kit is easy to use, requires no training and gives quick outcome.

    Abstract:

Applications: Persons who are involved in prolonged strenuous work often gets exhausted and it is estimated that at 100 per cent exhaustion level, they lost their physical and cognitive responses. Hence, they are susceptible to make error, which not only creates the property loss but importantly it impacts the lives of others which are present in the site. At present, the common way to estimate the exhaustion level is to take the response from individual itself like Profile of Mood Status method, but most of the time one fails to correctly estimate his present physical condition. Accurate estimation of physical exhaustion can be seen as crucial tool in various fields, for example:Exhaustion levels of soldiers who are most of the time exposed to vulnerable areas where medical facilities are difficult to reach. It can be a reliable tool for making decision of their duty chart. Measurement of exhaustion levels of personnel doing other type of strenuous activity like athletes, firefighters, traffic guards etc. Apart from these, the device can also be used to find various properties of saliva, such as PH, conductivity, etc in real time. This further increases the applicability of the product as a sub system in many biomedical detection processes which uses saliva as diagnostic fluid.
Advantages: Previous technologies for physical exhaustion detection use blood as a diagnostic fluid. The disadvantage with blood as diagnostic fluid is, it is invasive and requires trained medical personnel for collection and testing of samples. Unlike blood sampling, saliva can be easily collected in non invasive manner and doesnot demand the need for trained health care professional. Saliva is readily available, can be collected any number of times from any location. Our technique in exploring the rheological changes in whole saliva to estimate exhaustion level has highly simplified the earlier complex bio marker based detection techniques. It does not require any external systems or costly setups for its functionality. Extremely portable device with pocket friendly budget. Product is incorporated with sensors, processing modules and digital display making it highly responsive during detection. The product supports software updates through window platform, making it future proof.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work
read more >>

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
