    Abstract:

Applications: The setup can purify water using either of the series i.e. sediment filter-activated carbon filter-reverse osmosis membrane filter-UV light (SAROUV) or sediment filter-activated carbon filter-ultra-filtration membrane filter-UV light (SAUFUV) or both. The appropriate series or the combination of both series can be selected depending on the feed TDS value as can be seen from the online TDS meter and also depending on the availability of the feed water to be purified. The purification unit being housed inside a suitcase also houses a solar panel connected to a solar charge controller and battery unit and USB outlet unit. The setup can be opened up and can be set anywhere where water purification is required. The setup can also run if domestic power supply is available. The setup can purify water even if there is no power source and can utilize the power available in its battery unit to purify water. The same process is followed and the USB outlets available in the setup unit can provide power for the USB based LED bulb as well as charge mobile phones. Thus the setup is a complete solution for both water purification and emergency light and mobile charging usage which makes is very suitable for military as well as rescue operation during natural calamities like floods etc. No other single unit portable setup is currently available which can address all such problems and perform as a standalone setup.
Advantages: The invention can address all the problems as mentioned earlier. Several other works were carried out by different groups which are not as par and very easy to use as a one stop model which can purify water, monitor it as well as provide power from its USB unit for charging mobile, light LED lights etc which may be very useful during distress situations of floods, natural calamities. US patent No 5004535 has developed a somewhat similar model housed inside a briefcase which works on solar power to deliver pure water. The unit primarily used a RO unit for delivering pure water but had no U.V. setup for removing the pathogens which may still be present after passing through the R.O. unit. It neither had any power backup facility which could be used for delivering USB based power and neither its water quality could be monitored. It also dint have any backwash facility embedded inside it for cleaning of the filters inside which made it very prone to the filter clogging etc. Another device CN204999734U had an USB output facility along with activated carbon and ultrafiltration based cleaning methods, but that too dint have adequate power to light an at least 5W LED bulb overnight and charge a phone fully either individually or both. It neither had any facility to monitor its water quality and neither had it any advanced water purification setups like reverse osmosis, U.V. and no backwashing facilities too. The water purification cost is just around 14 paisa per litre.

THE VISION
THE MISSION
ABOUT I-STEM
It has always been the basic tenet of the Government of India, in generously funding R&D efforts at academic institutions over the years, that facilities established through such support be made available to those needing them and qualified to make use of them for their own research work

However, this was never easy or straightforward for, among other reasons, there was no ready source of information of what facility was available and where. Thanks to the Web, it is much easier today to have a national and regional “inventory of resources”, so as to match users with the resources they need, and to do all this in an efficient and transparent manner.

This can lead to a leap in R&D productivity and greatly enhance the effectiveness of public investment. This is the motivation behind I-STEM.
